The Road to Recovery after a Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC)

Written By Prolific Wellness Chiropractic and Sports Rehab on May 25, 2023

According to the statistics gathered by ODOT (Oregon Department of Transportation) there were roughly 33 thousand accidents resulting in over twenty-six thousand injuries between 2010 and 2019.  For those of you who reside Beaverton there were about seventeen hundred occurrences resulting in 1300 injuries.  When you look at the county statistics Washington county and neighboring Multnomah County account for over half of the states totals in both crashes and injuries.  Now there are many positive aspects to living in more densely populated areas of Oregon, but the traffic and resulting accidents that occur is not one of them.  These results should not be alarming, in fact Oregon does rank in the lower half of the national average of vehicle collisions.  That being said as resident of one of the great cities of either Beaverton, Portland neighboring city you should be knowledgeable about what to expect and how to deal with a motor vehicle collision in the unfortunate instance you become a statistic.

Whiplash and beyond

When we think of injuries resulting from a motor vehicle collision whiplash may be one of the most common. Whiplash is a ligament injury that can occur when your head and neck forcefully move forward and backward, like the snap of a whip. It can also happen when you move forward in your seat and back after being rear ended. This can also be the result of high-impact sports, amusement park rides, or even sudden falls. This movement can damage the vertebrae, discs, muscles, and connective tissue in your neck, causing neck pain, stiffness, and headaches.  Whiplash being the most used terminology associated with motor vehicle collision although many other complications may arise.

Treatment for Whiplash

Seeing a doctor at urgent care or the emergency room may be necessary depending on the severity of the injury that occurred.  In addition to your urgent care or emergency room visit, a chiropractor may significantly improve your path to recovery. From there, the diagnosis will dictate what treatment is necessary to get you back to normal from your accident.

Typical chiropractic treatments for whiplash may include the following: spinal manipulation, muscle stimulations or relaxation, specific trigger point therapy, Interferential electrical stimulation, exercise to help with mobility or stabilization, and soft tissue therapy.  This is not an exhaustive list, just some of the more common techniques the chiropractor uses to treat whiplash.  A chiropractor is a natural choice in helping with the recovery of a motor vehicle collision.
